Day services for adults with learning disabilities in Derby
A small, specialist day centre in Sinfin where adults with learning disabilities can grow skills, build friendships and feel safe and included.
Caring Places is a person-centred day centre for adults with learning disabilities, based at Sinfin Community Centre in Derby. We're open every Thursday from 9:30am to 3pm. Mondays will follow based on demand.
Built around the person, not the timetable
Every Thursday is shaped around the people in the room. Some come to grow practical skills like money handling, cooking and shopping. Some come for social time and friendships. Some come for sensory regulation and a quieter, calmer environment than busier services.
Whatever the priority is, we plan around it.
What a day might include
- Independent living skills: shopping, household tasks, self-care, budgeting and travel training
- Communication and friendships: social groups, role play, Makaton workshops, group games and trips out
- Creative and recreational: arts and crafts, music, drama, gardening, gentle sports
- Wellbeing: sensory regulation, mindfulness, quiet space when needed, healthy eating
- Community access: regular visits to cafés, parks, libraries, museums and local events around Derby

Support ratios
We offer 1:1, 1:2, 1:3 and 1:4 ratios based on assessed needs. Every person is given the right amount of support to be safe, included and developing. No more, no less.
The team
Staff are trained in learning disability, autism, communication approaches (including Makaton and PECS), Positive Behaviour Support, safeguarding and first aid. Ongoing training is part of our culture so practice stays current and evidence-based.
Funding
Three routes work for us, depending on your situation:
- Local Authority packages: Derby City Council can fund part or all of a placement
- Direct Payments: you choose where to spend the council budget
- Self-funding: you pay us directly, full flexibility, no council process
